Rights & Responsibilities of Students - Blair House Student Hostel

• Students will be expected to respond promptly to times designated for rising, meals, study and bedtime.

• Quietness is required during afternoon and evening study periods. Students are expected to meet all study and homework requirements. Each student shall respect the study demands of other students and no mobile phones are allowed while doing homework. iPod allowed with ear phones.

• A family atmosphere will be fostered in which each student will be required to respect the rights of other members. Orderly conduct is expected at all times.

• Care will be taken of students. In case of accident or illness, medical attention as considered by the houseparent will be sought. Parents will be advised as soon as possible.

• Students are responsible for making their own beds, keeping their own rooms, bathrooms and possessions tidy. Laundry facilities are available for student’s personal use. Laundry is taken home at the weekends.

• Students are allowed to go shopping two afternoons per week with permission, they are expected to return to the hostel before the afternoon study period commences. Students wishing to leave the hostel at night must have written consent of parents/ guardians. No students will be allowed out at night unless accompanied by a parent, guardian or authorised adult.

• Alcohol and smoking are not permitted at the hostel or in the grounds

• Visitors are only to be entertained in the main recreation area only.

• Homework is ultimately the responsibility of the student but the houseparents will be happy to assist with advice and support inside and outside of study period.

• No mobile phones are allowed at the dinner table or homework period

• No student shall leave the Hostel without permission and must always sign the Sign Out Sheet on entering/leaving the Hostel; this process assists the Houseparents to remain fully aware of the whereabouts of all boarders, at all times. Sign In/Out records are classified as legal documents and, as such, the Sign In/Out process must be taken seriously at all times.

• Failing to Sign Out/Sign In is deemed to be a serious breach of trust which the Hostel places in all students. Each matter will be considered individually and be referred to the Management Committee, from which a relevant consequence will be applied.

• Being out of bounds is strictly forbidden. Students are deemed to be out of bounds in the following instances:

– Off site at any time without the express permission of a houseparents/signing out;

– Out of his/her area after lights out/before 8 a.m., without the express permission of houseparents. This includes going to other buildings (i.e. dining room/recreation room, other dorms) or other rooms within the same building at these times.

• Being Out of Bounds is deemed to be a serious breach of trust which the Hostel places in all students. Each matter will be considered individually and be referred to the Management Committee, from which a relevant consequence will be applied.

• Senior students (years 11 and 12) may study either in their room (seniors are trusted to work autonomously).

• Students are permitted mobile phones at the Hostel. All students’, with the exception of Year 11 and 12s, must hand in their mobile phones, laptops and other electronic devices to the Hostel staff before lights out.

• Any student who does not keep the rules of the hostel may be reported by the houseparent to the Management committee. Persistent misbehaviour and breaking of rules may warrant expulsion.

• Personal privacy is a human right and no-one should be subject to unlawful interference with their privacy. No photos of any students, staff or BHSH Inc. dwellings will be placed on any social media unless you have permission from the student concerned or staff of BHSH Inc.
